Oceans of Archaea

چکیده

E arth’s microbiota is remarkably pervasive, thriving at extremely high temperature, low and high pH, high salinity, and low water availability. One lineage of microbial life in particular, the Archaea, is especially adept at exploiting environmental extremes. Despite their success in these challenging habitats, the Archaea may now also be viewed as a cosmopolitan lot. These microbes exist in a wide variety of terrestrial, freshwater, and marine habitats, sometimes in very high abundance. The oceanic Marine Group I Crenarchaeota, for example, rival total bacterial biomass in waters below 100 m. These widespread Archaea appear to derive from thermophilic ancestors that invaded diverse low-temperature environments. Novel cultivation strategies, in situ biochemical and geochemical methods, and environmental genomics promise to further our understanding of these and other ubiquitous and abundant Archaea.

Genomic and transcriptomic evidence for scavenging of diverse organic compounds by widespread deep-sea archaea

Microbial activity is one of the most important processes to mediate the flux of organic carbon from the ocean surface to the seafloor. However, little is known about the microorganisms that underpin this key step of the global carbon cycle in the deep oceans. Here we present genomic and transcriptomic evidence that five ubiquitous archaeal groups actively use proteins, carbohydrates, fatty aci...

Virus-mediated archaeal hecatomb in the deep seafloor

Viruses are the most abundant biological entities in the world's oceans, and they play a crucial role in global biogeochemical cycles. In deep-sea ecosystems, archaea and bacteria drive major nutrient cycles, and viruses are largely responsible for their mortality, thereby exerting important controls on microbial dynamics. However, the relative impact of viruses on archaea compared to bacteria ...

Psychrophiles and Psychrotrophs

Psychrophiles are extremophilic bacteria or archaea which are cold-loving, having an optimal temperature for growth at about 158C or lower, a maximal temperature for growth at about 208C and a minimal temperature for growth at 08C or lower. Psychrotrophs are cold-tolerant bacteria or archaea that have the ability to grow at low temperatures, but have optimal and maximal growth temperatures abov...

Supernatant Metabolites from Halophilic Archaea to Reduce Tumorigenesis in Prostate Cancer In-vitro and In-vivo

Halophilic archaea are known as the novel producers of natural products and their supernatant metabolites could have cytotoxic effects on cancer cells. In the present study, we screened the anticancer potential of supernatant metabolites from eight native haloarchaeal strains obtained from a culture collection in Iran. Five human cancer cell lines including breast, lung, prostate and also human...

The ocean's interior is Earth's largest biome. Recently, cultivationindependent ribosomal RNA gene surveys have indicated a potential importance for archaea in the subsurface ocean. But quantitative data on the abundance of speci®c microbial groups in the deep sea are lacking. Here we report a year-long study of the abundance of two speci®c archaeal groups (pelagic euryarchaeota and pelagic cre...
